Speaker's Bio
Gregory Smolynec is a Senior Fellow with the Conference of Defence Associations Institute.
In his public service career, Gregory held several positions focused on the security and defence of Canada. He began his career with the Department of National Defence as a Strategic Analyst in Defence R&D Canada where he later served as Section Head Land and Operational Commands, Section Head Strategic Analysis, and Director S&T Centre Operations before being promoted to Director General Strategic Initiatives on the Strategic Joint Staff of the Canadian Armed Forces. As DGSI, he led the Strategic Outlook function, an analytical, decision support process designed to identify and analyze the central military challenges facing Canada and to inform strategic decision-making and advice to government. Most recently, Gregory was Deputy Commissioner, Policy and Promotion in the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History from McGill University, a Master of Arts in Russian and East European Studies from Carleton University and a Doctorate in History from Duke University.
